South Africa is well know for its safaris and stunning cities but have you heard about the Garden route or the incredible beaches? Touring in a campervan around South Africa is a voyage of discovery.
If you are feeling nervous about how to go about renting a campervan then we are here to help. It is a similar process to renting a car but there are a few other considerations to think about. Firstly, where is everybody going to sleep? Not all campervans, 4WD campers, motorhomes and RV's are laid out inside the same. Some have enough room for six to sleep in three double beds. Others have a mixture of doubles and bunk beds and single beds too.
The larger motorhomes in South Africa have built-in shower and wc's. They are fully equipped for sleeping and eating. A small kitchen is also well equipped as standard.
The range of vehicles does vary from depot to depot. There is a different range between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
In remoter areas the vehicles are mostly 4x4 Land Cruisers and Toyota Hiluxes. Those more adventurous rent four-wheel drive vehicles to explore game parks and travel dirt roads.
The sleeping arrangements in the 4WD vehicles are often roof tents. A certain degree of agility required to climb the exterior ladder to the tents on the roof.
South Africa has long established, international brands of motorhome companies. These are also well known in Australia and New Zealand. Names such as Britz and Maui will be familiar to Australians and New Zealanders.
South Africa also has its own local companies such as Caprivi and Bobo and Roadtrippers. Combined there is a wealth of campervans to choose from to match both your needs and budget.
South Africa also has a very high standard of campsites that are competitively priced. We recommend that our customers spend every night in a campsite.
One-way rentals between depots is possible. Choose from:
Some companies offer free transfers from the airport. Others charge and others ask that you make your own way to the depot. All details are displayed when you request a quote or make a booking. Ask us if you need specific information such as depot opening hours; extra charges for early or late collection or cost of transfers.
One-way Rentals between African Countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Sudan are sometimes available on request.
Enter the dates that you want to travel into the booking engine and then the pick up and drop off cities and a list of options will appear.
Look at the images carefully to see the layout inside and outside of the campers. A full inventory of what included in each vehicle shown. If you have any specific needs, let us know.
South Africa is a country where adventures happen and memories made. It is a place where you will encounter the unusual, the fascinating and pure wildness of the African bush.
Hiring a camper allows you all the time you need to enjoy the sites. No need to rush by a tour guide while you sit and enjoy a sunset over the plains. No need to leave when you have spotted elephants on the move.
South Africa is a perfect place to introduce adventure to the family. Children revel in seeing real animals in a very real wild environment. Take a good camera and binoculars as you never quite know what will be around the corner.
Our customers return with exciting tales and fantastic photographs as the scenes in South Africa are like nowhere else.

These are the countries in Africa that you can rent between:
Yes, on the Garden Route but always make sure that you carry extra cans of fuel when travelling to remote areas.
All main roads have filling stations. In remote areas you may be offered fuel from cans. Be careful about using this option as it is difficult to always check if it is the correct fuel for your vehicle.
Filling stations accept credit cards but keep cash on hand for the rare occasions where this is not the case. Petrol stations are usually not self service and a small tip is often expected as the operator will fill the vehicle and also wash the windscreen.
If you are looking to see lots of wildlife then travel during the South Africa winter between May and August. If you are looking for a beach holiday then travel during South Africa's summer - October to April.
We strongly recommend that you don't especially around game parks. Africa at night is a very active time for animals. They can often be asleep on the roads or wandering around and can be difficult to see.
Yes, these usually apply to Zambia and Mozambique. You will be informed when you collect your camper where you are not allowed to take your vehicle.
