The campers range in size and budget. The smallest campers based in Lille,Lyon, Biarritz, Marseille, Annecy, Paris, Grenoble, Ajaccio, St-Malo, Vannes, Natntes, Angers, Bordeaux, Provence, Montpellier, Colmar, Nice, Strasbourg, Bastia, Rennes, Clermont, Vichy and Caen are sleeper cars or camping cars and for those on a limited budget offer the cheapest way to tour France.

The next size up from the sleeper cars and low-top campers is the VW camper with a pop-top that sleeps four people. These also have cooking facilities on board and are a budget option.

Waking in a Campervan

For those wanting on-board shower and wc the van conversions, 4-berth c-class and 6-berth c-class and A class vehicles provide space in abundance; a fully functional kitchen and many different sleeping options. There are motorhomes with a fixed double bed. There are those suitable to groups of friends or families that have bunk beds at the rear and those 4 and 6 berths that have two or three double beds or a mixture of all three.

France is so well suited for a road trip and the many sites to see. If it is a beach holiday or a mountain bike adventure then making a camper a base offers a home from home every day and night of your stay. Order bike racks, or book a motorhome with a garage for all your adventure equipment. These are handy spaces to store extra boots, beach gear or sports equipment.

Cooking in a Campervan
Motorhome hire: Cooking in a luxury Campervan

The very smallest campers only have a single gas cooking ring to heat up food on. However, soups, stews, curries, risottos, paellas or tins of beans can all be cooked on one ring with a little planning.

Larger Campers have more than one ring so most simple meals can be made in the campervan.

All campervans and motorhomes have a fridge on board. The smallest campers have a chilly bin or cool box. Larger motorhomes have a good sized fridge often with a small freezer compartment that is large enough for a packet of peas or ice cubes. When parked up and connected to the mains the fridges run off mains electricity. On the road they are powered by the on-board batteries. In some campers they are three-way and run off gas.

Most larger campervans and motorhomes have a microwave in the kitchen. This will only work off mains electricity

Taking a Shower and using the WC (toilet)in a campervan or motorhome.

The hot water for the shower is heated by gas. This will work as long as there is gas and water in the tanks.

The toilet is a cassette toilet. Empty this regularly. The cassette is filled with a blue liquid that breaks down all solids. There are dump stations on all campsites and in some public areas where campervans and motorhomes park up. Hose out the cassette after emptying and replace the blue tablet. This will ensure that everything is kept hygienic. The cassette is accessed from outside the campervan.

Exploring France with Avis Car Away
Can I drive a campervan?

Driving a campervan or motorhome is much like driving a big van. As long as you are aware of the extra height and length and take the corners slower than you would in a car, you will be fine. There are large mirrors so that you can see the sides of the vehicle. Remember if you are driving a motorhome with a "luton", where the bed is situated above the driver's cab. This is where inexperienced drivers damage as they forget its presence and go to close to hedges and walls.

When reversing it is a good idea to get another person to guide you back.
