Geneva and Zurich are the main collection points when renting a campervan in Switzerland. But there are more campervans to choose from in Zurich. Indie, Camper King and Pure are the three hire suppliers in Zurich and Black Sheep is the only supplier in Geneva.

Base your choice first by the number of beds that you need. Also, the bed layout. Some vehicles only have double beds. The day and night time layouts are illustrated when you start your search. Just click on the pictures of the campervans.

The cheaper camping cars are the converted cars. They have a double bed in the rear of the vehicle and basic cooking stove at the rear. If it is a budget camper that you need, then this is it.

Onboard shower and wc are in all the larger vehicles starting with the ever popular 2 berth with shower/wc. The Globus Plus Compact is perfect for two singles or a couple as the beds can be made into two singles or a double bed.

The larger 4 and 6 berth motorhomes have either two double beds or a double with two singles.

The classic VW California pop-top has great versatility and is economical to run. Perfect for a couple or two friends.

Tour Switzerland in comfort with the freedom of choice of where to go and when to go there.

Bicycle racks are free to hire on some motorhomes. It's great to have a bike on the back to cycle from the campsite or to cycle one of Switzerland's many cycle paths.

Are there toll roads in Switzerland and how do I pay?

Yes, there are toll roads and you can pre-pay by buying vignettes (toll sticker) from petrol stations, border crossings, post offices, online or by phone +800 1002 0030.

There are additional toll charges that the vignette doesn't cover. These are for Grand St. Bernhard Tunnel and Munt la Schera Tunnel. These have to be paid separately. If you travel on a toll road without a vignette you can incur heavy fines. You can avoid toll roads by using google maps on your navigation system or phone and in settings set to "Avoid Tolls".

Can I free camp in Switzerland?

Look out for "Reisemobil-Stellplatz”. This is a designated area for overnight parking for motorhomes, campervans and RV's operated mostly by local authorities.

In Switzerland this means that you can stay for one overnight stay at a Stellplatz either free or low cost. There are often services on site too. Stellplatz are the equivalent of "Aires de Service" in France and other countries in Europe. Free camping or wild camping is not technically allowed but there doesn't seem to be a problem camping for a limited time above the tree-line.

Every town has a tourist information office who may be able to advise on free camping sites.

If you are looking to pay for campsites, then it is worth looking at Swisscamps and Caravan Club sites

Can I rent a campervan during the winter months in Switzerland?

Yes, campervan and motorhome rental is available all year round in Switzerland.

Vehicles with onboard facilities using water may be winterised. This means that all the water is drained from the system to prevent the pipes freezing and causing damage. If renting from another country and planning on touring Switzerland, then you will need to check if you are required to have winter tyres or snow chains.

If you don't have the appropriate tyres you may not have access to many of the mountain roads and passes.

Can I rent a campervan to go skiing in Switzerland?

Yes. You can drive to most ski fields and some will allow overnight parking.

Many larger motorhomes have good rear storage areas - "garages". These are big enough to keep all your skis, boots etc. Having a camper on hand to make hot drinks, have a good breakfast, lunch and dinner saves money on the slopes. Larger motorhomes and campervans also have on board showers too. So even if you don't stay the night on the mountain you can at least use all the on board facilities and return to a campsite later in the day.

You may have to ensure that you have winter tyres fitted. Many of the rented campers will already have these.
